Smithsonian Ingenuity Awards
Every year Smithsonian Magazine holds an award ceremony to honor people who are pioneering their industries. The categories are vast, from comedy to aerospace, but they are linked their passion, inspiration and ingenuity for the work their are doing in their respective fields. For each of these awardees, we created an individual video about their work, life and contributions to their craft in addition to the video which kicked off the event.
When Editor-in-Chief of Smithsonian Magazine Michael Caruso approached us about the project, he told us a story about a food fight that took place in what is now the Portrait Gallery in DC, the same venue which would hold the Ingenuity Awards. He wanted the videos to reflect this wild and unexpected event, to somehow embrace the idea of such a distinguished crowd hurling pudding inside the walls of one of America’s most respected art galleries. Through a series of mood boards and storyboarding, we landed on the theme you see now in the video. We took playful primary colors and fluid shapes and combined them with a backdrop of institutional granite.
